Four of the best places to get out for a walk on the North Shore

If you’re looking for something to do on your day off or a weekend adventure then look no further than these beautiful North Shore walking tracks. These walks will give you stunning ocean, island and city views with the enjoyment of  surrounding nature and North Shore locals.

Walking The Bay’s

This particular cliff top and beach walk on Auckland’s North Shore starts from beautiful Campells Bay making your way through Mairangi Bay, Murrays Bay and a small part of Rothesay Bay. This walk showcases the most beautiful views of the North Shore, Hauraki Gulf and nearby Islands. This coastal walking track can be extended, depending on your level of fitness. When walking through the Mairangi Bay section of this walk, the walkway is weather and tide dependent. Although there is an alternative route through the suburban streets. So, just incase click here to check today’s tides. Mairangi Bay beach is generally quite a busy area, especially in the Spring & Summer seasons. The beach and walkways boast with dog walkers, sailors, swimmers, paddle boarders and surf live savers.

Difficulty: Easy – Mostly level paths with some steps and one steep climb. Suitable for most ages and levels of fitness

Chelsea Estate Heritage Park

Chelsea Estate Heritage Park is another North Shore local hot spot. The perfect place for a Summer picnic, a short stroll or a nice long walk. Most tracks through the Estate wind their way through the bush valley that Duck Creek runs down and exit at dead end streets on the boundary of the estate. A longer walk starts at the Chelsea Estate, walking through to Kauri Point Centennial Park and into the Chatswood Reserve. Along the way there are spots to relax, down at some of the quiet and secluded bays.

What you’ll see: The estate has a diverse range of plant species. The main types are regenerating tanekaha and kauri amongst old manuka. The estate is home to wide range of bird life. In and around the ponds are species such as Mallard Duck, Shag and Swan.

Takapuna Beach

This is a lovely east coast beach with beautiful views out to Rangitoto Island. With the sun coming up over the water or falling into the night, it’s long stretch of beach, approximately 1km is a magic spot to walk. An abundance of locals take their dogs down for walks throughout the day (restrictions apply in Summer). Takapuna Beach isn’t all Takapuna has to offer. Lynn Reserve & Giant Kauri

The walk starts off in Lynn Reserve, and heads up a bush filled gully with a small stream, to a giant Kauri tree (which is over 2 metres in diameter and is said to be about 800 years old!). This large tree is among a grove of smaller Kauri trees which are growing in Leigh Scenic Reserve – definitely a sight to see. The route joins up with the Glenfield Coastal Walkway and heads toward the boat ramp at Manuka Reserve (at the bottom of Manuka Road). The walk takes you through the bush and along the Upper Harbour coastline. This walk is not only beautiful, but provides a great workout.
