Finding a house that you like the look of is easy. Finding a neighbourhood that you never want to leave is much harder.

For Chris and Bronwyn, Milford, on Auckland’s North Shore, is one of those neighbourhoods.

“Properties in this part of town don’t come up that often,” says Chris. “We were really lucky to find a home in the area that’s really close to the beach and gives us the lifestyle that our family really loves.”

With a vibrant mix of young and older families, Milford offers something for everyone – especially if you like the beach.

“Milford Beach is so great for families and kids,” Chris says.

“We take our kids down there most weekends and fish off the rocks, explore rockpools, build sandcastles, walk our dog Nahla, and do a bit of boogie boarding when the waves are a bit bigger. The amazing coastal walkway between Milford and Takapuna is right there too. And all of it is just 170 metres away.”

“The local kids are always riding their scooters or playing ball sports at the end of the cul-de-sac. They can climb pohutukawa trees and swing on tyre swings. It takes us back to those times of old when life was simpler and kids could just be kids.”

Milford village is an easy walk away with its supermarkets, cafes and eclectic selection of boutique shopping. Because the area is so flat, it’s easy to get around by foot or pedal power. The property is in-zone for some of the North Shore’s leading high schools too, including Westlake Boys, Westlake Girls and Takapuna Grammar.

2/13 Muritai Road is set up well for young families looking for a relaxed – and safe – way of life.

The back house of two townhouses, 2/13 Muritai Road is a stylish, low-maintenance home with high internal ceilings upstairs, three roomy bedrooms, a separate office “with fibre which is great for working from home”, and a surprisingly large backyard.

“We’re hidden away from the street so the size of our outdoor area is a surprise in some respects. Many people don’t realise just how much space there actually is. We’ve got room for a trampoline and swing, plus nice big decks to take advantage of the north-facing sun.”

Harcourts agent Claire Curlewis, who is bringing the house to auction on August 20, says the versatility of this property is one of its biggest appeals too.

“I meet so many homeowners in this area who live in large homes and would like to downsize to something more manageable, but we rarely have any homes come to market in the seaward avenues, let alone smaller lock-up-and-leaves. If you’re a young family looking for a safe, friendly neighbourhood, a young professional couple looking for a low-maintenance home, or a retiree looking for a relaxing lifestyle, this property is perfect.”

For Chris and Bronwyn, their next move isn’t far from home.

“We love this neighbourhood so much that we’re only moving a couple of streets over. Milford is one of those places that’s so hard to get into, so when you do you never want to leave.”
